Student team InMotion, from Eindhoven University of Technology, has unveiled the latest version of its LMP3 EV racer equipped with ground-breaking ultra-fast charging battery technology, The Revolution, at its event The Revolution Back In Motion, held on August 19 at Circuit Zolder.

Over 200 spectators attended this historic moment, including partner companies, family and friends, alumni, old- and new team members, and professional drivers.

After an introductory presentation the car completed its debut lap on Circuit Zolder, accompanied by a distinctive electric hum, screeching tires and loud cheers from the audience. A remarkable milestone for InMotion, demonstrating a world’s first, a race car capable of sub-4-minute charging.

Innovative Battery Technology

During the run, the battery pack developed by InMotion provided a stable power supply, amidst demanding conditions of high speed, vibrations, and high temperatures. The key to this success lies in the combination of DESTEN Inc.’s ultra-fast charging, high-power cell technology and InMotion’s innovative cooling technology, which cools each individual cell separately. This system, forms the core of InMotion’s Next Generation Battery Pack (NGBP).

During the fastest lap, the fully electric race car recorded a lap time of 1:44.580, just six seconds off the track record. This result underscores our ambition to break records at both Zolder and Zandvoort in the future.

In tests validated by VDL ETS, the battery pack demonstrated outstanding stability under ultra-fast charging, from 10% to 70% capacity in 3 Minutes 26 Seconds, a world record charging time.

Looking Ahead

The current capacity and performance have shown promising results, but there is still room to further refine both the battery pack and the car. As a team, we see this not only as a milestone but also as a starting point to increase the robustness, efficiency, and overall performance. In the coming year, we are eager to take these next steps so that The Revolution can move even closer to reaching its full potential.

This demonstration marks a new era for electrification. InMotion not only expands the potential of battery technology in motorsport, but also its applications on the road, helping to lower the barriers to the global adoption of electric vehicles.
